IEP Team MembershipTEAM MEMBER ATTENDANCE SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
REQUIRED
Parent/Surrogate X Parent including a legal guardian,
surrogate, or the student if 18+ years
old, must be given prior written notice
(i.e., Notice of an IEP Team
Meeting). The parent must be given
at least 7 days notice. If the parent
does not attend, the meeting can still
be held.
Representative of the District X A SPPS administrator (e.g., principal,
assistant principal) or a SPPS staff
member licensed to supervise or
provide special education services
may be assigned by the administrator
to act as the Representative. The
Representative cannot be a service
provider on the student's IEP.
Under no circumstances should a
non-SPPS administrator e.g.,
principal of a parochial school
serve as the Representative of
the SPPS District.
General Education Teacher X The general education teacher must
attend the IEP team meeting unless
the student is not participating in the
general education setting (e.g.,
federal setting 4, etc.). The general
education teacher does not have to
attend the entire IEP team meeting
but must provide input to the team
regarding the stsudent's present level
of performance in the general
curriculum.
To help ensure that the general educa-
tion teacher is available to attend the
IEP team meeting, remember to
schedule the meeting at a time when
the general education teacher's
schedule permits him/her to attend.
Send the general education teacher
notice well before the meeting date
and remind your principal that the
general education teacher must be
present.
Special Education Teacher X A special education teacher licensed
in the disability area of the student
must attend the IEP to give input to
the development of the IEP.
Other Special Education Attendance at the meeting by other
Providers on the IEP service providers on the IEP is
encouraged but not required for the
IEP team to be in compliance to hold
an IEP team meeting. If a service
provider is not available for the IEP
meeting, the IEP manager should
gather any information or data from
the service provider that is needed to
develop the IEP.
Special Education Licensed Staff It is not required by rule that all the
Knowledgeable to Interpret Test Results evaluators that completed an
evaluation on a student be present to
present and interpret their test results.
Evaluators can communicate the infor-
mation to the IEP manager. Of
course, always have an evaluator con-
tact a parent if the parent has addition-
al questions about the evaluation.
Person Knowledgeable It is recommended that a person
in the Cultural and Ethnic Background knowledgeable in the student's or
family's cultural and ethnic background
attend the IEP team meeting.
However, the IEP team meeting is in
compliance if such a person does not
attend.
